Greetings fellow nerd type organisms

Hello, I figured I would eventually join here as I keep seeing interesting discussions in the side of phys.org Hope I don't disgrace myself, but you can all hope I host a weekly nerdy tech based radio show, so can be a little opinionated, but my aspie tendencies mean I am in good company.

Time evolution of wave function in an infinite square well potential

1. The problem statement, all variables and given/known data View attachment 235699 2. Relevant equations For this question my ans. is coming option (3) since the time part of the wave comes out to be same for both the energy states which is (-1)^(-1/8) and (-1)^(-9/8)... Relativistic momentum of two photons from a decay

1. The problem statement, all variables and given/known data View attachment 235661 2. Relevant equations (1) E2 = p2c2 + m02c4 (2) E = γm0c2 (3) E = Eγ1 - Eγ2... Relativistic momentum of two photons from a decay

Co2 ppm exposure relative to room m3 and air ventilation

Hi All, I am trying to find out how much CO2 (ppm) would be released into a ventilated room (m3) from a faulty pressurized gas cylinder to calculate risk associated. Would anyone be able to help me with a formula? I was trying to work with V=nRT/P but wasn't sure how do I translate the outcome... Co2 ppm exposure relative to room m3 and air ventilation

Lasers Versus Psychic Force Bubble

I don't understand how lasers can cut glass since it's permeable to light. Is it because all glass has some imperfections in it? I'm assuming it does *not* work that way but if someone could explain, that would be really helpful. I mean, glass is used to focus lasers so it's odd that lasers... Why does outdoor fan on heat pump need to run on heat mode?

The outdoor fan on heat pumps always runs when the compressor is pumping refrigerant when the heat pump is in heating mode unless the heat pump has defect(s). I don't understand why the outdoor fan on a split system heat pump needs to run when the heat pump is in heating mode. When a split... Why does outdoor fan on heat pump need to run on heat mode?

Need a machine to impart measurable charge (Coulombs) at will

Hi there, Does anyone know of a machine/equipment/technology, etc. that allows a person to give charges (Coulombs) to conductors in a measurable way? I've rubbed a ton of plastic rods with fur but that's not too measurable. The Van De Graaff is overkill or it if I try to connect alligator clips... Why is there rust on Mars?

Mars' red surface is said to be FeO rust. Rust requires Oxygen to exist. Are there any theories about where that original oxygen came from? I'm obviously trying to fish for possibilities of life in the past.

Physics as an interest

If theoretical physics is a big interest of mine but I can not see myself pursuing a career in physics, should I get a degree in it, learn some outside of school, or just stop perusing it as a whole and focus on my actual career?

Planetary Mass vs Atmosphere

I'm curious as to how the mass of a body affects the kind of atmosphere it can hold. I know that Earth tends to lose its lightest gases over time, which is one reason why helium doesn't build up in the atmosphere, whereas planets like Saturn and Jupiter have held on to lots and lots of hydrogen... Go to Hong Kong for PhD vs. stay in Europe for Master

Hi everybody, I have been thinking about this topic for weeks, without getting a definitive answer... I am a physics student in Heidelberg, Germany, just graduated with my Bachelor. I have worked on a research project in Hong Kong (from which I'll likely have my first publication) and have a... Go to Hong Kong for PhD vs. stay in Europe for Master

Dark Matter cross section

Hello! In most papers that present exclusion plots as cross section versus mass, the plot has a specific shape in which mostly the cross section decreases with mass. I am a bit confused why. If you assume that the density and speed of DM is constant, shouldn't a higher mass (and hence a higher... Dark Matter cross section

How Einstein et al treated Relativity

I was reading a document from the time of Einstein where the metric is refered to as "the fundamental tensor". That made me wonder if it's possible to derive all concepts of tensor field, scalar product, connectivity etc. starting from the requirement that the metric is invariant under change of... Induction motors

Hi, Can I please ask how the rotating magnetic field (due to the 3 phase ac) is changed? Is it due to the frequency of the ac supply that it can speed up and therefore drag the rotor along due to induction. If it is due to the changing frequency input that mimics a faster rotating magnetic field... Induction motors
